BLENDING SINCE 2012

How many Red Wines to create the perfect blend?

Are you a fan of wine? If so, fasten your seatbelt! Recently, Grain South Africa embarked on a wine blending journey at Pecan Manor to determine the magic quantity of Bordeaux wines required for the perfect blend. Imagine three teams plunging head first into the world of wine in search of excellence, each equipped with a glass, five different Bordeaux wines and plenty of opportunity to micro blend and experiment.

Let's talk about our Bordeaux wines first. Some of the best wines in the world are produced in the Western Cape, and the Bordeaux varietals are part of this collection of red wines.

Now picture three teams from Grain South Africa, each with the goal of producing the blend of blends, a flavour symphony that would cause Bacchus himself to cry with delight. Team A, maintained that Cabernet Sauvignon was a powerful wine. They were certain that this grape, with its powerful aromas and tannic structure, would form the foundation of their combination.

Then there was Team B who used a different strategy. They saw the softer side of wine and liked the silky smoothness of Merlot. No matter what else ended up in the bottle - they would be happy. They knew that the amount of Merlot was what made their blend unique.

Then there was Team C, who had creative thinking. They were not satisfied to limit themselves to a single grape. They were exploring the limitless possibilities of blending various Bordeaux varietals together on a mission to mix and match. The mission was clear - beat the rest.

With their blend percentages worked out, our team set out to provide all the teams with their bulk wine to blend, bottle, cork and label.

Deep and structured, Team A's bold blend put the Cabernet Sauvignon front and centre. Each sip of Team B's Merlot-infused masterpiece glided smoothly over the palate like a symphony of silkiness. What about Team C? Their daring attitude certainly paid off, as evidenced by the blend they produced. All the teams has become masters of blending.

The question on the quantity of Bordeaux wines required to achieve the ideal blend? Limitless permutations make the outcome of how many wines to create the perfect blend unanswerable. It comes down to personal taste of each person and each group. Ultimately it was all about the adventure, the quest, and the pure delight of tasting new flavours. Let's toast to Grain South Africa and their wine blending adventure, which once again demonstrates that the options for wine are virtually limitless.

Congratulations to Team B with their "Kat se Snor Blend".
